Microsoft demos Windows 10 on its latest mid-range handsets for the first time at MWC 2015

Microsoft has just announced the Lumia 640 at MWC in Barcelona this morning, running a demo of Windows 10 for the first time. The 5in handset has a 1,280x720 resolution display and will be available in cyan, orange, black and white in both single and dual SIM varieties in 3G and 4G. With a 2,500mAh battery and 8-megapixel camera with auto HDR, the Lumia 640 will replace the current Nokia Lumia 630 as Microsoft's primary mid-range Windows smartphone.

Launching in April, the Lumia 640 will be running Windows Phone 8.1 at first, but as with all Windows 8.1 handsets, it will be receiving a free update to Windows 10 later this year. It will cost 139 Euros for the 3G version and 159 Euros for the 4G version.

The Lumia 640 will also be coming in a super-sized phablet version with a 5.7in screen. The Lumia 640 XL has a larger 3,000mAh battery, a 13-megapixel camera and still only measures 9mm thick. Naturally, it will cost a little more, but at 189 Euros for the 3G version and 219 Euros for the 4G version, it may well prove more popular than its little brother. To make the most of Microsoft's office applications, there will also be a special foldable keyboard launching alongside it. Both phones will run a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor and have 1GB of RAM.

Microsoft made a big push for its cross-platform universal apps this morning, demoing how Office, Cortana, Spartan and Maps work across its smartphones, Surface tablets and Surface Hub. All worked seamlessly, syncing immediately across all the devices on show. Both the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL will come with a one-year subscription to Office 365 with 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage. The Office 365 licence will be valid for the phones, a Windows 10 tablet and computer.

We'll be going hands on with the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL very soon, so check back for our hands on impressions later this morning. We certainly hope they'll be better than Microsoft's first Lumia effort, the sluggish Lumia 535.
