Samsung is to release a super-sized version of its curved-screen flagship - the Galaxy S6 Edge+. Images of a retail store dummy of the handset have been leaked online, suggesting we won't have to wait too long for the device to go on sale.
Technical details about the new handset are sparse. It appears to be of almost identical size to the Galaxy Note 4 it's photographed alongside, suggesting the device will have the same 5.7in screen size as its phablet brethen. German site AllAboutSamsung, which aquired the leaked images, says the phone will ship with the same Exynos 7420 SoC found in the Galaxy S6 Edge, which is plenty powerful enough, although it may be asked to push around more pixels on the larger screen device, potentially limiting performance.
The release of the Galaxy S6 Edge+ continues Samsung's tradition of releasing its flagship handset in a wide variety of different form factors. The S6 generation was the first to include the curved screen Edge variant, but previous generations have included Mini and Plus versions of the handset. Samsung is rumoured to be preparing a Galaxy S6 Mini, which could be ready for launch alongside the S6 Edge+ next month.
The Galaxy S6 Edge proved to be more popular with customers than the company anticipated, perhaps leading it to take a chance on the bigger model. The company orginally thought it would sell one Edge for every four regular S6 handsets, but demand was roughly even for the two devices, forcing Samsung to adjust its manufacturing run and leaving the company with a stockpile of S6 handsets to shift, according to a recent report in the Wall Street Journal.
Earlier today, Samsung revealed details of its next generation Galaxy S2 tablets.
