Microsoft is hoping to take Windows mobiles off life support with two new flagship devices to be launched later this year: the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. The devices will be amongst the first to run Windows 10 Mobile when they're launched in the autumn.
Leaked images of the handsets have begun to emerge online, and The Verge's renowned Microsoft watcher Tom Warren confirmed details of the new models. The Lumia 950 XL will have a 5.7in screen, which is the same size as Samsung's Galaxy Note 4 phablet and a shade larger than the iPhone 6 Plus.
As with Samsung's Note, the larger device will support a stylus in the form of Microsoft's Surface Pen, allowing owners to jot handwritten note in apps such as OneNote. It will also reportedly have a smart cover with a "circular cut out for easy access to notifications," according to The Verge.
The regular Lumia 950 will have a 5.2in screen. Like its bigger sibling, it will use the USB Type-C connector, which is fast becoming the industry standard for the latest generation of mobile devices, giving hope that we'll one day have a universal charger for all our devices.
Microsoft's mobile division is in desperate trouble. Last month, the company wrote $7.6 billion off the value of its smartphone business, having only paid $7.2 billion to take the handset division off Nokia's hands in the first place.
CEO Satya Nadella said the company would focus on making fewer handsets, having flooded the market with countless Lumia models over the past couple of years, many of which have been targeted the budget end of the smartphone market.
