Microsoft has released the latest dashboard update for all Xbox One owners, bringing the firmware out of beta and making it available to download even if you weren't a part of the limited preview programme. As well as finally adding 3D Blu-ray playback support, the update also overhauls the activity feed to make it more user-friendly.
The update rollout was officially confirmed by Larry "MajorNelson" Hryb, who released a video detailing all the new features to the official Xbox YouTube channel. The August update finally brings the Xbox One on par with Sony's PS4, which has been able to play 3D Blu-ray discs for the best part of a month, but includes plenty of other features too.
With the update installed, it's now possible to use the Xbox Smartglass app or Xbox.com website to remotely buy and download games or add-on DLC. If your console is set up for automatic updates, it will start downloading your purchases straight away.
An expanded Friends section, accessible from the home screen, will let players keep up to date with their Xbox Live friends list, with the ability to post status updates or like and comments on the posts made by your friends.
Other additions include low battery warnings for paired controllers. If your controller starts running low on battery, a new notification will pop up to let you know it might be time to swap out those AAs or plug in a charging cable (if you bought the official battery pack). Finally, you'll now have the option to disable popup notifications when playing video, to avoid disturbing those long Netflix binges.
The Xbox One August update should be available to download now, so keep an eye out for a prompt to install it the next time you switch on your console.
