Motorola's rumoured Moto X+1, expected to be announced on the 4th of September, may have leaked online ahead of schedule

Just when you though he was out, a juicy new leak pulls him back in - phone manufacturers' worst nightmare @EVleaks briefly came out of self-imposed retirement last night to give us a better look at Motorola's upcoming Moto X+1 - weeks before the company will make it official.

The images, posted by @EVleaks' alter ego tech writer Evan Blass as a "retirement gift" to followers, show the unannounced handset in black and white colour options, as well as as wood panel effect rear cover on the white version. The Verizon logo on the back of each handset suggests the US mobile network will be one of the first to get the new phone, but hopefully it will head to the UK a little quicker than its predecessor, the Moto X.

The phone's overall appearance looks very similar to the original Moto X, albeit with the addition of front-facing stereo speakers. It's unclear whether the mysterious dots on the bottom of the handset have any purpose, with some media outlets speculating they could be extra front-facing webcams to create 3D effects similar to Amazon's Fire Phone.

Although nothing is confirmed yet, the handset is expected to arrive with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 5.2in, Full HD display and a 13-megapixel rear camera capable of shooting 4K video. The camera sensor appears to have two LED flashes, one on either side of the sensor, which could be used to reduce shadows or to better balance low-light images.

We shouldn't have long to wait to find out if the rumours are true - Motorola has scheduled a press event for the 4th of September, with press invitations teasing a new Moto X handset alongside a new Moto G budget smartphone, a mystery headset and the gorgeous Moto 360 smartwatch. We'll be sure to bring you all the news from the event as and when we get it.
