Following years of rumours and speculation, we might finally be getting close to discovering if Apple has indeed been secretly working on its first wearable - new rumours have suggested that the company is preparing to officially reveal the iWatch in less than two weeks, to coincide with the launch of the next iPhone.
According to Re/Code, which was the first source to report on Apple's rumoured plans for a 9th of September launch for the iPhone 6, the company will also be using that event to finally reveal the iWatch wearable. When it does, it will reportedly be heavily integrated with two of the biggest new features being added in iOS 8; HealthKit and HomeKit.
HealthKit, Apple's fitness and health platform which pulls data in from third party apps or fitness trackers and shares it with others, even if they weren't used to capture the original data, will apparently let the iWatch monitor your daily step goals and track regular exercise, but its other features are currently pure speculation. Heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels and blood sugar levels have all been rumoured, but until Apple makes the device official it's unclear exactly what it will be capable of.
HomeKit, meanwhile, it Apple's framework for controlling connected devices. Again, this is purely speculative, but Re/Code's John Paczkowski muses on switching on and off the lights or changing the temperature from his wrist using HomeKit integrated devices.
As demand for Smart Home devices like the Nest Protect smart smoke alarm, Philips Hue lightbulbs and Honeywell evohome temperature control system grow, it's clear that a universal standard would be beneficial to manufacturers and consumers alike - especially as proprietary systems like Archos' Smart Home have proved they have limited scope.
Little else is known about the iWatch, with no details on screen shape or size, internal hardware or indeed if Apple will even call it the iWatch. Hopefully this latest rumour will turn out to be correct, and we'll finally see what the company has been working on on the 9th of September.
