Apple sends out invites for an event on the 9th of September - it looks like the iPhone 6 isn't far away now

Apple has begun sending out invitations to a press briefing on the 9th of September, seemingly setting the date for an official reveal of the hotly-anticipated iPhone 6.

Scheduled to take place at 10AM Pacific time (6PM here in the UK) in Cupertino, just down the road from Apple's headquarters, the event was teased with a decidedly low key invite, with the simple phrase "Wish we could say more" beneath the time and location. Usually Apple drops hints in its event invites as to what's going to be on show, but not this time - the only clue we're getting from this is that maybe there will be more than one event to come this year in what is rumoured to be a very busy time for the company.

Now that we have a firm date, the speculation over exactly what Apple will be revealing can begin. The company is almost guaranteed to release at least one new iPhone, with months of rumours suggesting there will be a standard 4.7in iPhone 6 and larger, 5.5in iPhone 6L phablet. It will arrive with the final public release of iOS 8, which has been in beta testing for some time, bringing new additions HomeKit and HealthKit to the Apple product line-up. The former is a protocol for home automation, which would let you control everything in your house through one device, while the latter is a fitness tracking hub that will import data from third party wearables and share it with your preferred apps.

Recent rumours suggested that Apple would also use the event to introduce its first wearable, so far known only as the iWatch. If true, the company has done absolutely everything it can to keep the device a secret, as there have been no component leaks, no renders and no third party accessories to give the game away.

It's also possible we'll be seeing new iPads at the event; the iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina Display are rapidly approaching their first birthday, usually around the time Apple upgrades its portable devices, and leaks have shown devices with TouchID fingerprint sensors being produced in large numbers. However, it's possible Apple will wait until later in the year, in order to concentrate on manufacturing enough new iPhones to meet demand.

We'll be covering the event live from 5PM on the 9th, so be sure to check back in two weeks' time to find out exactly what Apple has been working on.
