Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is getting a fancy remastered edition later this year, following the Bethesda hosted E3 conference in the wee hours of this morning. Titled, Special Edition, it includes the game and all the add-ons previously released for the last-gen version, including the excellent Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn DLC packages.
It’s not just a simple repackage either, with graphics being completely overhauled to accommodate the extra processing power of the PS4 and Xbox One. New features like remastered art and effects, volumetric god rays (which make sunlight shining through the treetops extra pretty) and dynamic depth of field, so you might want to pick this up if you’re wanting a visual upgrade too.
You’ll also be able to browse and search for the latest and top Skyrim mods, just like the recently released Fallout 4. You’ll be able to choose your favourites, post feedback and easily install them, all through the same service that Fallout 4 has to offer. Installing mods is pretty simple, just select Mods from the Skyrim main menu or through Bethesda.net and start searching for visual and gameplay modifiers.
Rumours of a Skyrim remaster surfaced last week, with retail leaks and listings, along with insider comments too. The new trailer shown in the early hours, lets us know what we can expect with Skyrim Special Edition, detailing a considerable graphical upgrade from the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions released in 2011. While it is relegated to a slot at the end of the Fallout 4 new content announcement, we get to see a little bit of gameplay including the pretty textures and lighting.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition will launch worldwide for Xbox One, PS4 and PC on 28th October 2016. If you already own the PC version of Skyrim and it’s add-ons such as Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn or the Legendary Edition on Steam, you’ll also get a free upgrade to the Skyrim Special Edition when it releases later this year.
While many were expecting news about an Elder Scrolls VI, which has not yet been announced, it will come as no surprise to many that Skyrim is getting the remastered treatment. The biggest selling game in the history of the franchise, Skyrim launched five years ago to critical acclaim. The fantasy RPG sold more the 20 million copies since its release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, so it was inevitable it was to see a special remastered edition following the launch of the new consoles.
