Lenovo’s Yoga 920 might looks like an iterative upgrade to the Yoga 910, but the Chinese company has gone further than kicking its convertible laptop up a digit. With a 4K screen, Dolby Atmos sound, an 8th generation Intel Core chip and a host of new features, the Yoga 920 is a premium convertible with a lot going for it – not to mention a couple of Star Wars special editions that are more Yoda than Yoga.

Yoga 920 review (hands-on): Design, key features and first impressions

Going hands-on with Lenovo’s premium notebook, the first thing you notice is the company’s signature “watchband hinge”. Coupled with an all-metal, super-thin 14mm body, the Yoga 920 looks gorgeous. Flip the lid to see a 4K display and things only become more pleasing on the eye.

In terms of design, Lenovo also showcased two other versions of the Yoga 920 at IFA. The first is a Star Wars special edition range, in either a “light side” platinum Rebel Alliance finish, or “dark side” black Galactic Empire one. Less tied to a Disney brand is the Yoga 920 Vives, made in collaboration with the IED school of design in Milan and featuring a design printed directly onto the laptop’s Gorilla Glass lid.

Feature-wise, the Lenovo comes with support for Windows Ink across multiple applications; an expansion that’s aimed at giving users a reason to buy the Active Pen 2. There’s also support for Microsoft Cortana’s Far Field technology, which lets you interact with the virtual assistant even if your laptop lid is closed.

Powering the Yoga 920 is an 8th generation Intel Core i chip. Specifics about how well it performs will have to wait until we’re able to do full benchmarks, but Lenovo says its hybrid should manage a 15.5h battery life.

Yoga 920 review (hands-on): Early verdict

From our brief hands-on time with the Yoga 920, it’s apparent that Lenovo has confidently built on the hybrid’s predecessor to make something rich with useful features and fine design choices. It’s very much a premium convertible, but the Star Wars versions also hint at the company’s ambitions to tackle a more mainstream audience.

A real deep dive will come once we have time for benchmarks, but the early signs are encouraging.  The standard Yoga 920 edition is set to release this September, starting at £1,499. The Yoga 920 Vibes model will arrive in October starting at £1,599, and the Star Wars special edition lands in December – just in time for The Last Jedi. There’s currently nothing in the way of pricing information for those Star Wars offerings.
