Amazon Echo Spot is an Echo Show you’ll actually want

Amazon has announced a whopping four new Amazon Echo devices, and the Echo Spot is arguably the most interesting of the lot.

Working on the same principles as the Echo Show, the Echo Spot has a screen. But, instead of being a Frankenstein device of tablet and speaker thrown together, the Spot takes on a smoother, more spherical appearance and is roughly the size of an Echo Dot.

Amazon pitches it as an Alexa-enabled alarm clock, but it’s also capable of making video and voice calls and letting you watch video clips. It has all the powers of other Echo devices, meaning you can control your smart home, ask it to tell you jokes, give you updates about the weather and stream music via Spotify or Amazon Music.

Amazon Echo Spot release date: When’s it coming out?

Amazon is bringing the Echo Spot to UK shores early next year – sorry to anyone who was looking to pick one up in time for Christmas.

Amazon Echo Spot price: How much will it cost?

Amazon hasn’t formally announced a UK price, but the Echo Show launches in the US at $129. That equates to about £96, but expect it to land closer to the £100 mark. It’s likely that Amazon will subsidise the cost slightly to make it more appealing to those wanting to pick up an Echo Dot replacement.

Amazon Echo Spot features: What’s so special about it?

It combines the small form factor of the Echo Dot with the full-fat features of an Echo Show. It has a built-in speaker and full Alexa support, meaning you can make and receive video and audio calls as well as seeing Amazon’s flash cards for when you ask Alexa a question or to play music.

Amazon Echo Spot design: What does it look like?

The Amazon Echo Spot is a small, spherical device with a screen and camera built into its face. It’s available in both black and white and is small enough to sit on your side table without cluttering up your space. Its design is so small that Amazon actually thinks of marketing it as an Alexa-powered alarm clock, which is a tad unnerving when you remember it has a camera in it.

Amazon Echo Spot: Early verdict

At first pass, the Amazon Echo Spot is easily one of the more interesting Alexa devices Amazon has released recently. It’s far better looking than the Amazon Echo Show and has more functionality than an Echo Dot. Obviously, its price point is a little steeper, so it may not sell quite as well as the Echo Dot did, but for those wanting the functionality of an Echo Show for less, it’s worth a look.
