2015’s Chromebook Pixel was the torchbearer for all Chrome OS-powered devices. It was a shining example of the potential of Chromebooks, but it doesn’t hold up quite so well in 2017. Good then, that fresh leaks indicate a new Chromebook tour de force is on the horizon, and it’s called the Pixelbook.

Yes, this is the Pixelbook, and we already know plenty of information about Google’s latest ahead of the official unveiling. It will be feature-packed, with top-tier specs and a suitably high asking price. And it’ll be Google’s first stab at a 2-in-1 Chromebook, too.
Here’s everything we know so far about the Google Pixelbook, including UK price, UK release date, design, features and specifications.
Google Pixelbook: Everything we know so far
Google Pixelbook UK price: How much will it cost?
According to the initial Droid Life leak, the Google Pixelbook will start at $1,199 (~£904) for the 128GB model, reaching $1,749 (~£1,319) for the 512GB variant. For comparison, the original Chromebook launched for £799.
Google Pixelbook UK release date: When does it launch?
The Google Pixelbook is scheduled for an official unveiling on 4 October, during the firm's “Made by Google” event. Starting at 5pm, Google will finally give us all the juicy details about the Google Pixelbook and announce the Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Google Home Mini and new Daydream View.
Google Pixelbook design: What does it look like?
But, what does Google’s latest laptop offer that those cheaper Chromebooks don’t? Well, the Pixelbook is the firm’s first attempt at a premium 2-in-1 ultraportable. That is, this Chrome OS-powered laptop does double duties as both a laptop and a tablet, thanks to the 360-degree hinge and touchscreen display.
That’s what makes it so different from 2015’s clamshell-designed Chromebook Pixel, and a bit of added versatility will never go amiss. According to the leaked images, the Pixelbook also adopts a similar two-tone design of the firm’s Pixel smartphones.
Google Pixelbook features: What’s so special?
The Pixelbook is also said to benefit from added interactivity – with the official Pixelbook Pen launching alongside it. Priced at $99 (~£75), the Pixelbook pen is supposedly pressure-sensitive, with zero lag and tilt support – just like Microsoft’s Surface Pen, which accompanied the Surface Pro and Surface Studio.
Google Pixelbook specs: What’s new?
As for the Pixelbook’s innards, not much is known. The Droid Life leak indicates there will be three storage options on offer – 128GB, 256GB and 512GB – but as for the processor and RAM offerings, as well as display resolution and size, we’ll have to hold out until the official reveal.
Google Pixelbook: Early verdict
Sadly, information is hard to come by about Google’s Pixelbook at the moment, but from what we’ve seen so far, Google seems to have every chance at success. It’s always a welcome surprise to see a premium Chromebook make an appearance, as opposed to the cheap Chrome OS-powered laptops we’re all too familiar with.
The 2-in-1 Pixelbook also makes a lot of sense in a Surface Pro-dominated world. The business hybrid has worked well for Microsoft so far, so why not throw the Chrome OS hat in the ring? One thing’s for sure: it won’t be long until we see Google’s Pixelbook for ourselves. Stay tuned for our full Pixelbook hands on, soon.
