Far Cry 4 was an enormous hit back in 2014 and many fans were understandably expecting a Far Cry 5 follow-up in the subsequent year. Instead, they were treated to Far Cry Primal, a completely prehistoric take on the Far Cry franchise with spears and clubs to boot.
While the Far Cry games are known to take place in tropical islands, the plains of Africa – and now with the Stone Age, with Far Cry Primal – Far Cry 5 will be a huge departure from those exotic landscapes. So while you may think you know the reskinned worlds of Far Cry, Far Cry 5 looks to be tipping all that on its head. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming release of Far Cry 5.
Far Cry 5: When will it be released?
You will be able to get your hands on Far Cry 5 on 27 March 2018. Far Cry 5 was supposed to be released a whole month earlier, but it was unfortunately pushed back as Ubisoft needed more time to develop the game.
Far Cry 5: What platforms will it be available on?
Xbox One, PC and PS4, with additional Pro support.
Far Cry 5: What’s it about?
Like we mentioned above, Far Cry 5 is not what you expect from a Far Cry game, and that’s wholly evidenced by the setting. Instead of placing you in exotic tropical vistas or the Himalayas, Far Cry 5 is set in fictional Hope County in modern-day Montana in the US, a literal far cry from the other Far Cry games, but it’s still the same first-person shooter you know and love.
You play as a junior deputy sheriff, and go up against Joseph, a bearded Jesus-like figure who is the leader of Project at Eden’s Gate, a doomsday cult. The setting is rightly primed to provide biting satire and social commentary in the current political climate in the US.
Project Eden’s Gate has taken over Hope County and it’s your duty to liberate the residents and restore order using Far Cry’s trademark violence.
Far Cry 5: Characters
Far Cry 5’s announcement trailer was accompanied by trailers for the game’s main characters.
Mary May Fairgrave
Nick Rye
Pastor Jerome Jeffries
Far Cry 5’s range of characters will be playing an important role in the game, and should breathe some life into the admittedly tired franchise. In the E3 demo, we met a range of guns for hire characters. To break it down, the E3 demo gave the player a choice of three companions, these were:
- Nick Rye, a pilot who drops bombs from his planes and fires rapid off machine gun artillery.
- Boomer, a companion dog who can pull off some stealthy takedowns.
- Grace Armstrong, a long-range sniper who gives obvious coverage from far away.
Aside from that, we don’t know much about the other characters besides what we saw in the trailers above.
Far Cry 5: Gameplay
As mentioned above, the characters are a significant gameplay element, but an additional element is the introduction of resistance points. These resistance points will be gained by completing side quests in different regions of Hope County. You’ll come face to face with other leaders of the cult. As you gain enough resistance points by defeating the other cult leaders and completing smaller side quests, you’ll unlock the final boss battle, and will go up against Joseph.
Co-op
Far Cry 5 will have a major co-operative element, as revealed at the Paris Games Week 2017. As soon as you finish the tutorial, you’ll immediately have the chance to play through the game with up to four friends online, giving you the ability to share health packs as well as ammo and retain any items, guns and money you pick up.
