When The Coalition took over the reins from Epic Games, it played it safe and delivered an overall good, enjoyable game. Now we’re hoping that The Coalition will ramp it up in preparation for Gears of War 5, and deliver something truly thrilling.

On 23 January, Xbox’s games chief Phil Spencer basically confirmed that Gears of War 5 will be coming in the future. In an interview withThe Verge, he made a revealing comment while talking about the Xbox Pass. “The number-one request from our customers… was to get new blockbuster games into Game Pass,” he said. This will include “our future Halos, our future Gears of Wars”.

Not only does this mean we’re definitely getting a Gears of War 5, but we’re going to be able to get it with our Xbox Game Pass on launch day.

Gears of War 5: Everything we know so far

Gears of War 5 release date: Will Gears of War 5 be coming in 2019?

While Spencer didn’t provide eager fans with any concrete release date for Gears of War 5 in his interview with The Verge, we have a few ideas of our own, and we think that Gears of War 5 will be coming out in 2019.

For one, Gears of War 4 was released in October 2016. Historically, there’s been around three to five years between games, so it’s still a little early in the typical Gears of War development cycle.

Second, we still know nothing about Halo 6, and we think that game is likely to arrive before Gears of War 5. Considering that Halo 5 was released before Gears of War 4, Microsoft will probably look to release them in different years, especially as both games are top performers for the company. This leaves us with a 2018 release for Halo 6, and a 2019 release for Gears of War 5.

Gears of War 5 story

If you’ve landed on this page, you’ve surely already played Gears of War 4 and you’re just as tormented by that cliffhanger ending as we are. Still, without giving too much away, we expect to see a continuation of Kate’s tragic storyline and the return of Oscar Diaz after we saw him escape the snatchers in a post-credit scene. Other than that, we really know very little about the story of Gears of War 5 and how it will play out.

Gears of War 5 gameplay

Gears of War 4 saw a brand-spanking new studio take control of the franchise. Epic Games handed the keys to Rob Ferguson, of the newly formed The Coalition, and the studio produced a solid game. The thing is, it wasn’t mind-blowing, simply delivering all the same old game mechanics of previous titles.

Even Cliff Bleszinski, previous director of the Gears of War series, advised The Coalition to take a few more risks. In an interview with GameSpot, Bleszinski said: “What The Coalition did was give the people what they want. He did the JJ Abrams Episode VII. I’ve watched Episode VII five times. I still get misty-eyed and all excited, but when I think objectively about it, I’m like ‘there wasn’t a lot of risks there’. So I’m hoping they take a little bit more risk in the future.”

The game mechanics weren’t too different from any previous Gears game, other than the introduction of transformer-like robots at the end of Gears of War 4. Hopefully, Gears of War 5 will introduce some new game elements that aren’t merely tacked onto the back of the campaign.

Gears of War 5 platforms

As a Microsoft release, you can bet your bottom dollar that Gears of War 5 will be out on Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs. Gears of War 5 will almost definitely be developed in 4K, too, to take advantage of the Xbox One X’s power.
