The smallest ones start thimble-sized, but the range stretches up to a stupendous 1kg bunny that comes in its own transparent carry case. Thorntons Gruffalo Egg
Price when reviewed: £3, or two for £5 | Buy now from Ocado
Julia Donaldson’s award-winning story has long been a best-seller for younger children – so they’ll love this egg, which comes packaged in familiar illustrations straight from the book. The chocolate is sweet, sugary and decorated with the monster himself, all ready to thrill littluns on Easter morning. There are plenty of other great Thorntons eggs in the multi-buy deal too, ranging from Footy Fantastic to a pretty butterfly egg.

Harrods Single-Origin Colombian Milk Chocolate Easter Egg
Price when reviewed: Was £60, now £45 | Buy now from Harrods
Although this is the most expensive egg in our roundup, it’s a lot cheaper than it was, with a whopping £15 knocked off the price. And you get a hell of an egg for your money: it’s made with the most discerning chocolate lover in mind, using premium “fino de aroma” cocoa beans, which are the caviar of chocolate. The upshot is a flavour quite unlike any other – not just smooth and creamy but intense, toasty and buttery, with hints of malt. You can personalise it for an extra fiver.

Morrisons King of The Eggs
Price when reviewed: £12 | Buy now from Morrisons
No kid is going to be disappointed by this enormous egg – it’s so large, it will probably take up half your breakfast table. The swirls of yellow give a pleasing finish to the milk chocolate, and while we found the taste a little on the sweet side, that probably makes it ideal for children who don’t give two hoots about subtle flavours. Meanwhile, the packaging – complete with regal crown poking out of the top of the cardboard – is fitting not only for the name, but the overall majestic feel to this splendid Easter egg.

Aldi Dairyfine Curious Inventions Egg Popping Candy
Price when reviewed: £2.99
This vibrant milk-chocolate egg is available in three versions – rocky road, honeycomb or (our favourite) popping candy. Despite the low price tag, it’s a super treat, thanks to the generous splattering of brightly coloured sweets jam-packed onto the front of the chocolate egg, which is then finished off with white chocolate decoration. But the best bit by far is the audible crackle sound and fizzy, exploding feeling in your mouth when you stumble across a piece of the popping candy.

Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference White Chocolate Bunny
Price when reviewed: £6 | Buy now from Sainsbury's
Adults may look down on white chocolate, but it’s always been a winner among children, and this albino bunny is far richer and tastier than the grainy, sugary stuff you get in bargain-basement bars. It’s another sizeable option, so you might need to ration it out, and the design is appropriate for pretty much any age. Oh, and just so you know, white chocolate isn’t just a fake version of chocolate – it's a derivative, made up mainly of cocoa butter, which milk and dark chocolate also contain, just in smaller quantities.

Cadbury Dairy Milk Peter Rabbit Toy Easter Egg
Price when reviewed: £6 | Buy now from Tesco
Peter Rabbit and his three sisters – Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-Tail – star in this year’s hot kids’ movie, so this Cadbury egg with its soft Peter Rabbit toy is bound to be a major hit with littluns. The egg itself is small, but the packaging is colourful and appealing. A great gift, combining a little chocolate and a lovely keepsake.

Asda Extra Special Belgian Chocolate Taster Selection of Easter Eggs
Price when reviewed:£5 | Buy now from Asda
This attractive trio of chocolate eggs is a great choice for those who love dark, milk and white chocolate in equal measure – and who appreciate attention to detail. The white chocolate egg with freeze-dried raspberries is a sweet and very slightly tart sensation that really awaken your taste buds. Next, there’s the milk chocolate egg, studded with nuggets of salted caramel for a salty sweet sensation. Finally, there’s the dark chocolate with crisp flakes of cherry – again, a delectable balance of flavours, this time between bitter and sweet. It’s a sophisticated treat, and the box is fancy too: no one will ever guess it cost only a fiver.

Tesco Finest Dark Chocolate Egg
Price when reviewed:£5 | Buy now from Tesco
A few chunks of this intense dark chocolate is the perfect way to round off a long Easter lunch. With decorative strips of white chocolate and freeze-dried raspberries adding rich flavours, this is another egg that looks and tastes far more expensive than it really is. The only problem is breaking into it in the first place – it looks so exquisite with its trendy design and elegant packaging that you might want to spend a bit of time appreciating the aesthetics first. Once you’ve got stuck in, though, don’t expect it to last long.

Price when reviewed:£7.50 | Buy now from Betty's
This Harrogate chocolatier offers a wide range of Easter confections, including a limited-edition white chocolate egg with handcrafted sugar flowers – yours for just £250. But for those who weren’t planning to splash quite so much cash this Easter, there are plenty of less pricey options, including this beautiful pink Easter egg made from wonderfully indulgent Swiss Grand Cru milk chocolate. The shimmering finish gives a pretty, feminine touch, while the hand piped woodland fern design in white makes it unmistakably Betty’s.

Waitrose Dark Chocolate Avocado Easter Egg
Price when reviewed:£8
This extraordinary egg looks modern and fun – and fear not, it tastes absolutely nothing like avocado. The shell and stone are in fact made from silky smooth Belgian chocolate using 70% cocoa, while the slightly sweeter white chocolate middle uses natural colourings to mimic the green inner flesh of the fruit. Waitrose explains that, inspired by the trend for “all things avocado”, it set out to create a playful egg that could be “a fun talking point.” It’s certainly succeeded there, and it’s delicious too.

Aldi Specially Selected Exquisite Hot-Air Balloon Easter Egg
Price when reviewed:£12.99
Hot-air balloon eggs are very in right now, but the best ones are generally pretty pricey. Aldi’s offering however costs just over a tenner, yet looks every bit as flamboyant and spectacular as you’d hope – and the chocolate is sumptuous too, tasting sweet and creamy without being too sugary or rich. As if that weren’t enough, our testers were also delighted by the Denbies Whitedowns sparkling wine and gin and elderflower mini eggs contained in the basket below.

Lily O’Brien’s Sea-Salted Caramel Egg
Price when reviewed:£12 | Buy now from Lily O'Brien's
Don’t be confused; this is a milk chocolate egg, with just a kick of caramel from the infused chocolate swirls. The sea-salted caramel comes in the chocolate treats arranged around the egg. Made in both dark and milk chocolate, they pack a beautifully textured sweet and salty kick that will leave you wanting more and more. Good job there are nine of them.

Marks & Spencer Octagonal Hand-Painted Belgian Chocolate Easter Egg
Price when reviewed:£12 | Buy now from M&S
Marks and Sparks have come up with some real beauties this year for Easter, including a good selection of opulent-looking eggs at very reasonable prices. We think this is their shining star for 2018: a gorgeous hand-painted pink and gold egg made from luscious Belgian chocolate, with mini Marc de Champagne truffles neatly displayed around the bottom of the transparent box. It’s not one of their largest eggs, but there’s a real depth of flavour here, with hints of subtle but rich caramel. If you value quality over quantity, it’s not to be missed.

Godiva Pixie Milk Chocolate Easter Egg
Price when reviewed:£20 | Buy now from Godiva
Godiva has come up trumps with this velvety milk chocolate egg. It’s accompanied by six individually wrapped mini eggs, each boasting a different flavour – milk chocolate, white chocolate, milk chocolate strawberry ganache, white chocolate and hazelnut praline and biscuitine, milk chocolate and hazelnut praline and milk chocolate and spéculoos mousse. The presentation is second to none, with a golden coloured box and simple but effective cream ribbon. A truly decadent egg that’s guaranteed to wow anyone who knows anything about chocolate.

Artisan du Chocolat Sculpture Easter Egg
Price when reviewed:£35 | Buy now from John Lewis
Discerning chocolate lovers, rejoice. You’ll think you’ve died and gone to heaven when you bite into this teardrop-shaped, contemporary-looking, gold-shimmered egg, moulded in 70% Columbian dark chocolate. And that’s before you’ve even started on the melt-in-the-mouth ganache-filled chocolate egg with 18 carat gold leaf decoration – and the selection of intense dark mini eggs hidden within the packaging. No wonder this chocolatier, founded in 2000 by Irishman Gerard Coleman, supplies to so many Michelin starred restaurants. Treat it with care, though – it’s fragile.

Selfridges Selection Milk Chocolate Easter Egg
Price when reviewed:£29.99 | Buy now from Selfridges
A prettier egg you will not find – but snap one up if you’re keen, as only 250 have been produced, exclusively for Selfridges. Each one is handmade by award-winning Somerset-based chocolatier, The Chocolate Society, so while they all share the artistic splashes of colour, each one is unique. You won’t be disappointed with the taste either: the smoothest of smooth Valrhona milk chocolate is creamy, but with just a little bite for a more intense finish. We love the luxurious packaging too, which acts as a display case for this work of chocolate art.

Hotel Chocolat Champagne Easter Egg Extra Thick
Price when reviewed:£27.50 | Buy now from Hotel Chocolat
If you’re planning to browse through Hotel Chocolat’s extensive range of Easter eggs, we suggest you eat first: if you’re remotely hungry, you’ll want to buy the lot. Of all the company’s tempting treats, however, our favourite for this year is this new addition to the “extra-thick” range – a half 40% milk chocolate, half strawberry-white and milk chocolate shell that’s so dense it’s actually pretty hard to break into. Inside, there’s a generous selection of Mercier champagne truffles – ever-so-slightly crunchy on the outside, smooth as velvet on the inside. It’s feminine, decadent and fruity, with just the right balance between sweet moreish chocolate and a welcome boozy kick.
