Amazon has always been well ahead of the curve when it comes to TV streamers. Way back in 2015, the online shopping giant was the first to offer 4K media streaming – beating Roku, Apple and Google to the punch – so it’s no surprise that Mr Bezos’ company has teased the next device in the long, long list of Fire-branded streamers.

Called the Fire TV Cube – this isn’t a reference, as far as I’m aware, to Phillip Schofield’s silly game show – very little is known about Amazon’s mysterious new TV streamer at the time of writing. Other than a couple of interesting snippets floating around the internet (none of which are confirmed) we have very little idea of what to expect from this strange new device.
Still, that hasn’t stopped me writing about it, has it? Oh no, I’ve scoured the internet to try and piece together the Cube, so you don’t have to. So, if you’re as befuddled about Amazon’s new device as I was, this is the place to be. Here’s everything we know (or lack thereof) about the Amazon Fire TV Cube so far.
Amazon Fire TV Cube: Everything you need to know
Amazon Fire TV Cube UK release date: When’s it coming out?
Amazon’s Fire TV Cube is expected to launch soon. We have no firm details, but Amazon has already teased its fancy new TV streamer over on its US storefront where – and this is the only thing we’ve seen from Amazon itself – details are “coming soon”.
^ This is the Fire TV Stick, not the Cube
And that’s your lot. Of course, since there’s no such teaser page on the UK site, it doesn’t bode well for a simultaneous release over here in Blighty. I will update this page if anything changes, though.
Amazon Fire TV Cube UK price: How much will it cost?
Not a clue, shall we move on?
Okay, we COULD take a look at Amazon’s current media streamer offering and make a vague (somewhat) educated guess as to what to expect. The Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote can be picked up for £40, and the Fire TV – which offers 4K streaming – is yours for £70. As this looks like a more fleshed out set-top box, I imagine the Cube will be more expensive than both. Possibly.
Amazon Fire TV Cube design: What does it look like?
Well, to state the obvious, I expect Amazon’s new media streamer will look like a cube. It’ll be silly if it doesn’t, right? Imagine if something called the Cube was cylindrical? Silly Bezos.
But of course – shock – we do have a few leaks to report on in this regard, and we have a vague idea of what this new device looks like. A cube, yes, but a leak from AFTVnews way back in September last year suggests that the TV Cube will have a blue light circling the top, similar to Amazon’s Alexa-powered Echo devices, with similar volume-up, volume-down and mute buttons on the top.
Supposedly there will be six holes on the top to accommodate far-field microphones too, and it is also likely that the Fire TV Cube will have an Ethernet port and room for microSD storage expansion. There’s also an IR emitter, to remotely control your TV.
Amazon Fire TV Cube features: What does it do?
Sadly, again, very little is known about the Fire TV Cube’s raison d'être. It looks increasingly likely that it will form some sort of bridge between your Alexa-powered speakers and your bog-standard TV streamer – thanks to the built-in voice capabilities – but we will have to wait and see what Amazon unveils in the (hopefully) not too distant future.
