Apple has finally released iOS 8, with the latest version of its mobile operating system now available to download. With the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus launching on Friday this is one of the biggest ever weeks for Apple and its fans and the iOS 8 launch is being hit by predictable problems.
Users are reporting estimated download times well in excess of three or even four hours, with Apple's servers being inundated with requests. iOS 8 is a 1.1GB update, with in excess of 4GB of free space needed on the device before installing. The exact amount of free space required varies by device.
iOS 8 is compatible with the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S (the iPhone 6 will ship with iOS 8). Only the iPod touch 5th generation is supported. For iPads, the iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad Mini and iPad Mini with Retina Display are supported.
Apple normally experiences issues with iOS updates, with millions of people around the world pummelling its servers to grab the latest software. With iOS 8 one of the most hotly anticipated updates ever download speeds from Apple are crawling for users trying to download it. Some users have advised that it is much quicker to dock your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to a computer and do the update via iTunes.
The best advice is to wait until later tonight or if you don't need to use your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch plug it into the power, start the download and leave it alone for a few hours.
There are lots of new features and major updates in iOS 8, with Apple Pay, health and fitness apps and trackers, Wi-Fi calling, an improved Messages app, better iCloud integration and Handoff with OS X Yosemite all included. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 will both launch with iOS 8 pre-installed, with EE, O2, Three and Vodafone offering a range of deals.
