For reasons that it kept to itself, Amazon has taken a very long time in bringing its video streaming service, Amazon Prime Video (previously LoveFilm Instant in the UK), to Android devices. Previously available on Amazon's own Kindle Fire tablets as well as iOS, the service is now available on Android tablets and smartphones. However you can't simply install it from the Play Store, so here's how to get the service on your device.
- First install the normal Amazon App from the Play Store, you can do this using the link and push the app down to your phone from the store. Once installed you'll need to log into the app using the Amazon account details that are associated with your Prime or Prime Video account.
- Once that's all done, you need to go into the app and play some Prime Video content. You can find this by scrolling down until you find some content, or by hitting the menu button (three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner and choosing Amazon Instant Video from there. Choose the content you want to watch, or anything with the Prime banner in the top-left corner of the thumbnail for now.
- The app will then direct you to install the Prime Instant Video Player, click through to the screen for that, but first you'll need to agree to accept the installation of apps from unknown source (ie. not Google Play) on your handset. Amazon will guide you through this, though if it goes wrong you can find the appropriate setting in Settings/Security on your phone or tablet, just tick the box next to 'Unknown Sources'.
- The app will then start installing on your handset and will appear as a seperate app, called 'Instant Video' which you can then launch to browse video on the service and watch it on your device.
- If you're concerned about security then it's worth going back into Security Settings and unchecking the Unknown Sources tick box once you're done.
