Microsoft has announced that all Lumia handsets running Windows Phone 8 will be upgraded to the very latest version, Windows 10, upon release.
Microsoft confirmed the upgrade in response to a tweet asking whether it was worth buying a Lumia 930 now, as the new OS is scheduled to be released in spring 2015.
Tellingly, the tweet mentions Windows Phone 8 rather than 8.1. This should mean that all Windows Phone handsets from 2012's Nokia Lumia 920 onwards should be eligible for the upgrade.
The Lumia social media team also seems to be on-message regarding the Windows naming convention. The tweet refers to "Windows 10" rather than "Windows Phone 10", showing Microsoft is keen to emphasise that Windows 10 will be one OS running on many devices.
This is good news to those who fear being left behind by the march of progress. When Windows Phone 8 was launched in 2012, those who had bought Windows Phone 7 devices, such as the Lumia 800, missed out on the upgrade; despite only having bought their phones a year earlier and most likely with several months left to run on their mobile contracts.
