Sony might claim to have made wearables a big focus last year, but for the company's CES 2015 press conference there wasn't a whole lot to talk about. The highlight was instead an upgrade to an existing model, changing the Smartwatch 3 from plastic fantastic to a stainless steel stunner.
The much needed upgrade swaps out the plastic watch surround and rubber strap for a silver stainless steel case and watchband, which we think looks rather stylish. The watch itself can still be popped out and placed in an alternative surround, meaning you could potentially wear the stainless steel version to work then swap it for a plastic surround when heading to the gym.
The upgrade should put it on a more level playing field with circular smartwatches like the Motorola Moto 360 and LG G Watch R, as well as the square yet stylish Asus ZenWatch.
Otherwise, the stainless steel Smartwatch 3 has every one of the plastic orignal's features, including an Android Wear OS and integrated GPS for mapping running routes, even when you haven't brought a paired smartphone along in your pocket - something still unique to Sony's wearables. That also means you get the same 1.6in, 320x320 resolution transflexive display, however, which failed to impress us in the past when sat alongside traditional LCD and OLED alternatives.
Wearable fans will be able to pick one up in the UK from February onwards, and although we're still waiting to hear about official pricing, expect it to cost more than the £179 plastic original model.
The only other wearables on show at Sony's CES booth this year are a pair of prototypes; the previously announced EyeGlass, a rival to Google's own Glass wearable headset, and Smart B-Trainer, a waterproof wireless headset which coaches you while you're exercising. Unfortunately we're still in the dark as to whether either will see the light of day as commercial products.
