Leak reveals more details about Apple's forthcoming smartwatch

A leaked iPhone app for the Apple Watch has revealed some intriguing new details about the soon-to-be-released smartwatch. Dubbed the Apple Watch Companion, the app details a number of settings for the device, according to screenshots published on 9to5Mac.

Perhaps the most interesting snippet contained in the screenshots is the Apple Watch's support for onscreen monograms. This will allow users to embed their initials - or any combination of up to four letters - directly onto their chosen clockface, offering a means by which to personalise their device.

The companion app allows users to tailor much of the Apple Watch interface, including the choice of clockface, the placement of app icons, and whether to enable phone notifications. A "subtle red dot" on the clockface can be switched on to alert users when a new notification is received on their iPhone.

Everything you need to know about the Apple Watch

As previously revealed, the Apple Watch won't offer an onscreen keyboard for replying to text messages, but the app's settings show that users can choose to either dictate a reply or record the sender an audio message. Users can choose to set either of these methods as the default, but also switch between them when replying to individual messages - handy if you prefer to dictate messages, but can't get the speech recognition to accurately transcribe a particular word or name.

Other minor features detailed in the leaked app include the ability to monitor the share price of a chosen stock, with the user able to choose between displaying the current price, price change, percentage change or market capitalisation. The app will also let users switch off the physical feedback used to signify when it's time to take a turning when using the Maps app, presumably to save battery life.

Apple, which announced the Watch back in September, is expected to finally put the device on sale in March. The company has been working to improve the device's battery life, but Apple CEO Tim Cook recently conceded that users will have to charge the device every night.
