Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 users to get a free year of Windows 10 at launch, with Windows 7 users following a year later

Microsoft has announced it will be providing free upgrades to Windows 10 for all users who are currently running Windows 8.1, Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 7.

Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 users will receive a free upgrade for the first year that Windows 10 is available. Once Microsoft's latest operating system has been available for a year, Microsoft will be offering a free upgrade to Windows 10 for all Windows 7 users as well. What's more, Microsoft will then be providing support for the lifetime of your device.

Terry Myerson announced the news at Microsoft's press conference in California today. Myerson also said that the question of "what version are you running?" will soon cease to exist, as Microsoft aims to keep developing Windows 10 for the foreseeable future, suggesting it could be "one of the largest internet services on the planet" in the next couple of years.

This is great news for consumers, as it could signal the end of big drastic OS upgrades every couple of years. It's also good news for developers as it means they'll be able to target all device types with just one application, providing greater parity across PC, laptop, mobile and Microsoft's Xbox One games console ("the most fun games console ever", according to Myerson).

Myerson also hinted about other things we might see during tonight's press conference, including Continuum, Microsoft's way of letting you continue your work across different devices. Myerson said it should be easy to put down one device and continue where you left off. He also foreshadowed Windows 10's natural gesture interactions, saying that interacting with your PC should be as natural as interacting with people, whether it's through voice, pen, gestures or gaze controls. To give an example, Myerson said you should be able to print with a flick or transfer a Skype call with a gesture.

We'll be keeping you up to date with all the latest Windows 10 news throughout the evening, so be sure to check back later for everything you need to know about Microsoft's brand-new operating system.
