Microsoft slips out new Technical Preview of Windows 10, but there's no voice assistant for UK users

Microsoft has released a major new preview of Windows 10 - Build 9926 - although one of the key new features is missing for UK users. As announced last week, Microsoft has made several key changes to the operating system since the last preview build was released in November.

However, one of the biggest new additions - the integration of the Cortana voice assistant - isn't yet enabled for Windows 10 testers in the UK. Although a new Cortana bar has been added to the taskbar, inviting users to "Ask me anything", any attempt to do so is met with a message saying "I'm afraid I'm not available to help in your region".

Nevertheless, there is still plenty for UK users to get their teeth into. Microsoft has once again fiddled with the behaviour of the Start button, which now behaves even more like the Windows 8 Start Screen than the Start button of Windows 7. You can now scroll up and down through the live tiles in the Start menu, or expand the Start menu to full screen at the click of an icon.

Those running Windows 10 on a hybrid device, such as a Microsoft Surface, can take advantage of another new feature. The operating system now automatically detects when the keyboard is removed and offers to put the device in "Tablet Mode", which makes the Start Menu and any apps run only in full-screen mode. When they keyboard is reattached, the Start menu shrinks back to its normal size and apps can be run in resizable windows.

Windows 10 notifications have also been revamped, with a new, much bigger menu now available when you click on the icon next to the clock in the bottom right-hand corner. The notifications panel also inlcudes options to switch into tablet mode (on relevant devices), alter display settings, connect to a network and open the main settings menu. If you think that sounds like most of the features that used to be in the old Charms menu, you'd be absolutely right: the little used Charms appear to have been consigned to the Recycle Bin in Redmond.

Build 9926 also includes a revamped Xbox app, although it doesn't yet support some of the promising features announced last week, such as the ability for PC and Xbox One players to play the same games simultaneously, and the option to stream Xbox One games to your Windows 10 device.

There are many more minor tweaks to the OS, including a visual redesign of Windows Explorer with the option to "pin" favourite folders to a Quick Access menu, and a revamped Settings menu. However, there's no sign yet of the new Spartan browser, which looks set to replace Internet Explorer as the default browser in Windows 10, even if Internet Explorer will still be available to download.

You can get your hands on the latest build in one of two ways. If you're running an earlier preview of Windows 10, go to the Settings menu and check for updates, and you should be given the option to download and install the latest version. If you're starting from scratch, you can download the Windows 10 Technical Preview here

Remember, this is still preview software and we'd advise against running it on any device you rely on for work.
