Samsung has called a press event for 1 March where the company is expected to unveil its next flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S6. The event will take place the day before Mobile World Congress, where many smartphone manufacturers show off their handsets for the year ahead.
The teaser image used for the press invite shows what looks like a very thin profile of a smartphone with a rounded kink in the screen, suggesting Samsung might be bringing curved screen technology to its flagship device. Samsung has already dabbled with curved-edge screens on the Galaxy Note Edge, and now looks set to be doing something similar with the most important device in its expansive range.
Rumour mill: what's been leaked about the Samsung Galaxy S6?
Supposed leaked images of the Galaxy S6 - more of which have been released today - have shown a handset with a delectably thin profile, but none so far have revealed a curved display. Samsung has been relatively conservative with the design of the Galaxy S range in recent years, going for minor iterations rather than sweeping changes. With disappointing sales of the Galaxy S5 dragging down Samsung's profits, the company may have opted for a more radical design to reignite interest.
The press teaser image also appears to show a metallic case, rather than the plastic that Samsung has previously used for the Galaxy S range. Samsung said in an earnings report earlier this year that it was planning to move to metal or glass casing for its premium handsets, and this appears to confirm that decision. A move to a curved profile or metallic/glass casing will almost certainly mean that the Galaxy S range will lose what many regard as one of its chief selling points: the removable battery.
1 March is going to be a busy day for Android fans, with HTC also set to announce its new flagship smartphone on the same day. As with CES, companies are increasingly getting in ahead of the official opening of a technology show, so that news of their refreshed product ranges doesn't get lost in the flood.
