Microsoft has announced the first details surrounding the October Update for the Xbox One, finally confirming when console owners will be able to get their hands on DLNA multimedia playback - almost a year after the Xbox One first arrived.
The details were revealed by Larry "MajorNelson" Hryb, Microsoft's head of Xbox Live, on his official blog late last night, ahead of the global launch of Bungie's hotly-anticipated space FPS Destiny.
Chief among the long list of changes and extra features is the addition of DLNA and MKV multimedia playback support. You'll be able to access music, photos and videos from any DLNA-compatible networked PC or NAS device, saving you the need to transfer files to a USB flash drive first.
The update also adds support for the Xbox One Digital TV Tuner, which goes on sale in the UK from the 21st of October, the ability to stream TV to a SmartGlass-enabled smartphone or tablet, a new MiniGuide to show you what's on, what's coming up next and other programme details without obscuring the whole screen.
More gaming-specific features include a redesigned Snap Center, which includes quick access to Friends, Messages and Game DVR, as well as the clock and battery indicator. Double tapping the Xbox button will display a menu letting you open a new app in snap mode, close the current snapped app, or switch between your game and the running snapped app
Microsoft will also add several user-requested features, including a resived Devices & Accessories page to make it easier to assign accessories to specific users, hide games in the "ready to install" list under My Games and Apps, and locate a specific controller by making it vibrate from within the Dashboard.
The October update isn't expected to hit Xbox One consoles until next month, although seeing as the September Update arrived slightly ahead of schedule in August we're keeping our fingers crossed it could arrive a little earlier. When it does, your console should automatically download the update if automatic updates are enabled.
