Motorola could be working on gold Moto 360 smartwatch

Hastily changed website image seemingly gives the game away ahead of official announcement

Motorola's Moto 360 is easily one of the most attractive smartwatches currently available, with many fans saying it even beats Apple's recently-announced Apple Watch in terms of style, although it's only available in silver and black whereas Apple will be introducing its first wearable in gold. Based on a leaked image, however, Motorola may not be far behind.

Images spotted on the official Motorola website, which were saved by Android Police before being switfly edited, then taken down altogether, appear to show a version of the Moto 360 with a gold chassis. Seen side-by-side with the black and silver models, it's clear there is indeed a third version on display, although from the single image it's impossible to know if it is actually made from gold, or is merely gold plated.

When Android Police asked for clarification, the company said "Although we can't comment on gold specifically, we’re always exploring new materials and we intend to provide Moto 360 in a selection of styles in the future."

By not ruling gold out altogether, it seems Motorola may indeed be working on a more high-end version of its first smartwatch. It would certainly help it compete with the Apple Watch edition, which will use 18 karat gold rather than stainless steel to appeal to more discerning watch wearers.

The image only shows the watch, not the strap, so it's unclear if Motorla will also be upgrading the leather band that ships with the standard watch. Although the company revealed images of a stainless steel band ahead of launch, the watch is currently only available with a leather strap.

In the meantime, the UK is still waiting to get their hands on the original stainless steel Moto 360. It is expected to go on sale in the next few weeks, and should cost £199.99 from the Google Play store.
